Just because something is very appealing to you does not mean you should expend any of your energy doing it. Also, just because everyone is doing something does not say you must do it. You must learn to do things based on how significant they are, the values they will create, how impactful they can be and if they are within the context of your purpose to the glory of God. By choosing not to do everything, you can keep your life very simple. Unfortunately, many people are busy doing stuff but are not effective in the process. They are so engrossed with what they are doing that they have not slow down to think if their action is moving them towards their end goal. Remember it is possible to be moving but not progressive.
Please understand that life is not static. You can either be moving backward, forward or in a circle. If you are not moving forward, then you are stuck. You must find ways to unstuck yourself so that you can move forward progressively.
Responsibly strive to do what is needed for your destiny, what will make your life count, and what will bring glory to God’s name. As Apostle Paul wrote in 1Corinthians 10: 31 “Therefore, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.” That means if what you are doing today does not bring glory to God’s name or honoring Him, you must stop doing it.
If what you are doing today is not making a positive impact and enhancing people’s dignity, you must stop doing it. Also, if what you are doing is not revealing your purpose in life or help you grow in your purpose, you have no business doing it. If you keep doing what you are not meant to be doing, you will end up frustrating yourself and others, wear yourself out, get tired easily, become unnecessary because you will end up as a misfit. You must learn how to strategically use the one life you have to do what will help you to be impactful.
The truth is that you are not meant to do everything. You are not meant to be everything to everyone. You are not meant to meet every need. You are not meant to be everywhere. You are not meant to serve everyone. There are things that you simply must not do no matter how good they are or how convenient they appear to be. For example, if you are a preacher, you are not meant to preach everything. Your job is to stick to the message that God has given to you and be impactful in the process. We have too many people trying to do too many things because they think that by doing a lot of things God will be happy with them and people will be happy for them.
To avoid the trap of trying to do everything, here are a few suggestions to consider…
Be intentional: Living must be intentional. So, you must be intentional about being intentional. If you want to be sensational at the end of it all, you must be intentional starting now. You need to be conscious of the kind of life you are living or want to live and learn how to live it out. Your life is your life and being intentional means you are living it out day-by-day by adopting God’s pace while living in the space He has provided for you.
Not comparing yourself with others but gauging yourself with what you have not done that you can do. Being intentional will prevent you from getting incapacitated. Everyone has capacity because of their purpose. As you increase your capacity so should your intensity increase to lead a meaningful life. Being intentional means that you are living your best life per time to the best of your ability and to the glory of God. Unfortunately, some people are not living their best life because they are waiting for the perfect time to do so. They are waiting to get better to do better. To get better implies that you are doing your best and learning in the process.
Weigh your options: Life is about options but not every option is meant to cushion you. You must learn to make choices and make them count. Every option that you make can either cement your portion or endanger your prospect. Your options can either set you in motion or cause regression. Today is the best day to start looking closer at your life, habits, lifestyle and start making the choices that can empower you. Weighing your options means that you are looking for the best steps to take to get the best results with what you have. You don’t want to keep on expending your energy or stretch thin your other resources without progress. You want to be strategic in your dealings. Weighing your options requires you to look at the ins and outs, the pros and cons, the price to pay before you engage in any activities. Will it worth your time? Will it pay off at the end? Will it save you time and energy at the end of the day or in the long run?
Learn to say no to some things: You must understand that not everything is worth your time. Some things are not bad in themselves but may not move your forward towards your desired end if you keep on engaging in them. They are there to waste your time. If you don’t learn to say no to some things you may miss the opportunity to do what is significant with your time. I have said it many times that life is time sensitive. You must learn to protect your life by saying no. It may be one of the best things you will ever say.
Keep evaluating: whatever you give your attention determines what takes precedent in your life. Productive living is about prioritizing. Having priority means choosing and doing the things that are very crucial and significant to your destiny. Other things can wait in the process but not that one. Therefore, learn to evaluate your life, focus, and interests from time to time to ensure that the first thing is still the first thing and it will remain the first thing as long as you live. The reality is that what is a priority today may not be tomorrow. Things change and sometimes quickly. However, continuous and consistence evaluation helps you to keep on adjusting your sail every time. Some things in life must take the back seat if you want to remain in the driver’s seat. Some things don’t belong inside the car or in the trunk for that matter. They are not just worthy of the journey anymore. They might have been important at the beginning but they don’t fit into any of it and they don’t belong either. Continuous evaluation helps you decide what to keep and what to toss, who to keep closer or farther from you.
Delegate: Although it is possible to do everything by yourself, however, if you really want to be more productive, efficient, and effective with your life, you must not do everything by yourself. You must learn to streamline your life by sharing responsibilities. There are some things you are good at, there may be other things you goof at. Still, there may be things you are better or best at, you must decide what you can delegate to free your time to do what you are best at that only you can do to maximize productivity and profit.
Understand that people around you are capable as well. They are good at something in fact they might be better than you in some areas. Some people however, will require some training and mentoring to come to the level you want them to be but if you do not learn to trust them, they may not rise to the occasion. You may not delegate everything to them at once but you need to let go of some control and give others the opportunity to grow also. What are you willing to let go of? What can you delegate to others? How can you communicate to people that you trust them?
In conclusion, I want to encourage you to not try to do everything, do only things that will help you grow and become more effective. Please evaluate your life to see what you are doing, what you should not be doing, or what you can delegate to others.
